Maria Strecht Almeida holds a PhD in Sociology (Sociology of Culture, Knowledge and Communication) by the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra and a degree in Biochemistry by the University of Porto (U.Porto). Currently, is Assistant Professor at the Molecular Biology Department of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) of U.Porto. At ICBAS, teaches both basic and laboratory biophysics and science and society. Her current research interests focus on the dynamics of the life and health sciences as well as on research ethics and/or research integrity. MSA has been actively involved in organizing science outreach events, most of which emphasizing discipline crossovers. Presently, coordinates the Communication and Image Office of ICBAS. Was co-coordinator of the thematic section Knowledge, Science and Technology of the Portuguese Sociological Association, in 2018-2022.
Alexandra Moreira holds a D. Phil. in Molecular Biology, University of Oxford, UK and a Biochemistry degree, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. She currently holds a Principal Investigator position at ICBAS, is the leader of the group Gene Regulation at i3S and serves as vice-Director of the IBMC. At ICBAS, she teaches several BSc, MSc and PhD courses, is a member of the Scientific Board of the Molecular and Cell Biology PhD Program and heads the International Relation Office. The objective of her research group is to understand and elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in regulating gene expression and protein production at the RNA level, in particular by alternative polyadenylation and mRNA 3’end formation. She mainly focus on those events that are physiologically relevant in health and disease using state-of-the-art molecular biology methodologies. Her expertise lead her to apply her know-how in the development of new therapeutic tools. Alexandra has been actively involved in Science communication and dissemination, by organizing training schools, seminars and conferences directed to students, and has engaged in several activities with the general public.

Manuel Vilanova is Full Professor of immunology at ICBAS-UP where he is responsible for several curricular units related to immunology and infection. He graduated in Biochemistry by U.Porto in 1988 and joined ICBAS-UP in 1989, working at the Laboratory of Immunology under the supervision of Professor Mário Arala Chaves. MV defended the PhD thesis in Biomedical Sciences – Immunology at ICBAS-UP in 1999. He is/was the PI in projects in the areas of infection and immunity. MV supervised/co-supervised more than thirty PhD students and post-docs. He authored more than one hundred publications, including scientific articles, book chapters and patents mainly in the fields of immunology, infection and microbiology. His studies particularly addressed immunobiological mechanisms operating in hosts infected with pathogens with high impact in human or animal health, such as Candida albicans, Staphylococcus epidermidis or Neospora caninum. MV heads the Immunobiology group at Instituto de Inovação e Investigação em Saúde (i3S) of U.Porto. He presided the Portuguese Society for Immunology in 2012-2015.
